Switching to energy-efficient LED lighting and Energy Star-rated appliances is a great first step. These upgrades consume less energy, reduce your electric bill, and minimize your home’s overall environmental impact.

But here’s the extra perk: insurers often see these windows as a safety upgrade, too.

Picture this: It’s 2015, and a family in a quiet suburban neighborhood decides to go all out for Halloween. They adorn their yard with a magical display of pumpkins, ghostly figures, and cobwebs that would make even Dracula jealous. But as the moon rises high, a wicked group of teenagers lurk in the night, armed with mischief and a penchant for chaos. They smash the pumpkins, leaving orange guts splattered everywhere and the family’s Halloween spirit in shambles!

When the sun rose the next day, the family was devastated. Their carefully curated Halloween decor was a sight for sore eyes, looking more like a pumpkin patch massacre. But fear not! The family filed a claim with their homeowners insurance, which covered the costs of the damaged decorations. They were able to replace their festive displays, restoring not just their yard, but their Halloween cheer!

With mounds of TP hanging from every eave, the cleanup required a small army. Luckily, this family had their homeowners policy on their side. They filed a claim that covered the extensive cleanup and landscaping repairs. As they swept away the remnants of the previous night’s festivities, they learned a valuable lesson: Halloween is all fun and games until someone finds themselves in a toilet paper fiasco!

Think you know what home insurance covers? Think again. Misconceptions about your coverage could leave you exposed when it matters most, potentially costing you money and peace of mind. The world of home insurance is full of myths that can lead to confusion, poor decisions, and even financial loss. Let’s set the record straight by debunking five common home insurance myths, so you can make informed choices and better protect your home and your wallet.

Myth 1: Home Insurance Covers Everything in Your Home

Truth: While home insurance does cover many personal belongings, it doesn’t cover everything. Homeowners insurance generally protects against perils like fire, theft, and certain types of water damage. However, certain items like jewelry, art, or collectibles may not be fully covered unless you purchase additional endorsements or riders.

To ensure your valuables are adequately protected, take an inventory of your belongings and assess their value. Understanding what home insurance covers is essential, especially for high-value items. It’s a good idea to talk to your insurance agent about adding extra coverage to your policy. This proactive approach will give you peace of mind knowing your prized possessions are secure.

Myth 2: I Don’t Need Home Insurance if My Home Is Paid Off

Truth: Even if your home is paid off, you should still consider maintaining home insurance. Without insurance, you could face significant financial loss if disaster strikes. Imagine your home experiences a fire or a severe storm. Without coverage, you would be responsible for all repair costs, which can be devastating.

Additionally, many local governments require home insurance for homes within certain areas, especially those prone to natural disasters. Even if it’s not mandated, having insurance protects your investment and ensures you won’t face financial ruin in the event of an unexpected incident. Understanding what home insurance covers can help you appreciate its importance in protecting your paid-off asset.

Myth 3: All Home Insurance Policies Are the Same

Truth: Not all home insurance policies are created equal. While most policies provide similar types of coverage, there are significant differences in terms of what is covered, how much coverage is provided, and the conditions of the policy.

For example, a standard homeowner’s policy (HO-3) covers the structure and personal property against most perils. However, if you live in a high-risk area for flooding, you might need a separate flood policy. Other homeowners might consider specialized coverage, such as landlord insurance if they’re renting out their property.

Before committing to a policy, take the time to read the fine print and understand what home insurance covers. This will help you choose the right coverage for your unique needs, ensuring you know exactly what you’re getting.

Myth 4: Making a Claim Will Always Raise My Premium

Truth: While it’s true that filing a claim can impact your insurance premium, it’s not a guaranteed increase. Insurance companies typically evaluate claims history when determining rates, and not all claims will result in higher premiums.

For instance, if you file a claim for a minor incident, such as a small roof leak that costs a few hundred dollars to fix, your insurer may not raise your rates. Conversely, frequent or large claims can flag you as a high-risk policyholder, potentially leading to premium increases.

It’s essential to weigh the pros and cons before filing a claim. If the cost of the damage is close to your deductible, it may not be worth filing. However, if it’s a significant loss, you should definitely consider making a claim to protect yourself financially and to understand how it may affect what home insurance covers.

Wildfires can spread rapidly, engulfing vast areas and threatening homes, wildlife, and lives. If you live in a region prone to wildfires, having a well-thought-out evacuation plan is crucial. This guide provides essential steps to help prepare your family, pets, and livestock for evacuation.

Understanding Your Risk

Know Your Area: Familiarize yourself with the wildfire risk in your region. Stay informed about local wildfire warnings and alerts through reliable sources such as the National Weather Service or your local fire department.

Create a Fire-Resistant Zone: Maintain a defensible space around your home by clearing dry vegetation and flammable materials. This can slow the spread of fire and give you more time to evacuate.

2. Prepare your Evacuation Plan

A. Family Safety

Create a Family Emergency Plan: Ensure every family member knows their role in an evacuation. Assign responsibilities, such as who will gather important documents, who will handle pets, and who will drive.

Designate Meeting Points: Choose a primary meeting place in case you get separated. Make sure everyone knows how to reach these locations.

Develop Multiple Evacuation Routes: Identify several routes to leave your area, and practice driving them. Keep updated on road conditions and closures during a wildfire emergency.

B. Emergency Kits

Assemble Go-Bags: Each family member should have a backpack with essential items:

Water (one gallon per person per day)

Non-perishable food

Medications and personal hygiene items

Flashlight and batteries

First-aid kit

Copies of important documents (IDs, insurance papers)

Clothing and sturdy shoes

Cash and credit cards

Phone chargers

Pet Emergency Kits:

Food and water for several days

Medications and medical records

Leashes, harnesses, and carriers

Familiar items like toys or blankets

Current photos in case you get separated

Livestock Supplies: Prepare to transport or shelter them

Halters and ropes

Feed and water for several days

Identification tags

Transport vehicles or trailers

C. Communication

Stay Informed: Monitor news and weather updates regularly. Use reliable apps and websites for real-time alerts.

Communication Plan: Have a list of emergency contacts. Inform a relative or friend outside the affected area of your plans.

3. During Evacuation

Early Evacuation: Don’t wait for mandatory orders. Leaving early reduces stress and ensures a safer escape.

Transporting Pets and Livestock:

Pets: Secure them in carriers or with leashes. Load them into your vehicle first, weather permitting.

Livestock: If you have trailers, move animals to pre-arranged safe zones. If evacuation isn’t possible, release them into large pastures with minimal vegetation and away from buildings.

Home Preparation: Before leaving, take steps to safeguard your home

Close all windows and doors but leave them unlocked for firefighters.

Move flammable furniture away from windows.

Turn off gas and propane.

Leave lights on to help firefighters see through smoke.

4. After Evacuation

Check for Safe Return: Listen to authorities and only return when it’s declared safe.

Inspect Property: Be cautious of hazards like downed power lines and hotspots.

Seek Help: If your home is damaged, contact local disaster relief services for assistance and shelter.

5. Special Consideration for Pets and Livestock

A. Small Pets

Safe Handling: Use carriers to reduce stress and prevent escape.

Shelter: Identify pet-friendly shelters in advance or have arrangements with friends/family.

B. Large Animals and Livestock

Pre-Evacuation Practice: Regularly load and transport livestock to ensure they are comfortable with trailers.

Emergency Shelter: Establish contacts with facilities that can house your animals during emergencies.

C. Wildlife

Safe Coexistence: Do not try to rescue wild animals. Provide them with escape routes and avoid interfering with their instinctual behaviors.

6. Review and Practice your Plan

Regular Drills: Conduct family evacuation drills twice a year. Include pets and practice loading livestock.

Update Supplies: Check your emergency kits annually. Replace expired items and adjust the contents as needed.

If you’re planning a BBQ, a road trip, or a day at the lake, it’s important to be aware of common summer hazards and how to avoid them. Here are the top summer insurance claims and tips to keep your summer safe and stress-free.

Avoid these Top Hazards

1. Outdoor Fire

Barbecues and bonfires do make the livin’ easy, but they can quickly become dangerous if not handled properly. According to insurance reports, outdoor fires are a leading cause of summer claims, often resulting from unattended grills, improperly disposed of coals, or fireworks.

Prevention Tips:

Keep Grills Supervised: Never leave a lit grill unattended. Make sure it’s placed on a stable surface away from flammable materials.

Properly Dispose of Coals: Allow coals to cool completely before disposing of them in a metal container.

Use Fireworks Safely: Only use fireworks in legal open areas away from buildings and dry grass, and always have a fire extinguisher nearby.

2. Slips & Trips

Summer fun can also increase the amount of slips and trips. Wet pool decks, sandy walkways, and uneven outdoor surfaces can lead to injuries that might result in insurance claims for medical expenses or liability.

Prevention Tips:

Maintain Clean Surfaces: Keep pool areas dry and free of clutter. Regularly clean and level outdoor pathways.

Proper Footwear: Encourage the use of non-slip shoes around pools and other wet areas.

Adequate Lighting: Ensure all outdoor areas are well-lit to prevent accidents in the evening or at night.

3. Car Accidents

Summertime road trips are a must, but increased traffic and longer travel distances can lead to a rise in car accidents. Summer also sees an increase in teen drivers, which can contribute to higher accident rates.

Prevention Tips:

Regular Vehicle Maintenance: Check tire pressure, fluid levels, and brakes before any long trip.

Plan Ahead: Use navigation apps to avoid congested routes and take breaks to stay alert during long drives.

Safe Driving Practices: Follow speed limits and encourage focused and defensive driving, especially in unfamiliar areas.

4. Boat Accidents

Having fun in the sun often involves boating, but it comes with its own set of risks. Insurance claims for boat accidents often involve collisions, capsizing, or injuries from water sports.

Prevention Tips:

Wear Life Jackets: Ensure everyone on board always wears a properly fit life jacket.

Boating Safety Courses: Take a boating safety course to familiarize yourself with navigation rules and emergency procedures.

Avoid Alcohol: Just like driving, operating a boat under the influence significantly increases the risk of accidents.

Driving at Night: Drive slower than daytime boating and ensure your boat is equipped with the correct navigation lights. These help you see and be seen by other boats.

5. Drownings

Swimming and water activities are major draws during the hot summer months, but they also come with the risk of drowning, particularly for children. Drowning incidents can lead to tragic outcomes and substantial insurance claims.

Prevention Tips:

Supervise Constantly: Never leave children unattended near water. Designate a responsible adult to watch over them.

Learn CPR: Being trained in CPR can save a life in emergencies.

Install Barriers: For home pools, install fences and use safety covers to restrict access when the pool is not in use.

6. Home Burglary

With many people vacationing during the summer, homes can be left vulnerable to burglaries. Insurance claims for stolen property and home damage tend to spike during this season.

Prevention Tips:

Security Systems: Invest in a good home security system with alarms and cameras.

Neighborhood Watch: Inform trusted neighbors of your absence and ask them to keep an eye on your property.

Appear Occupied: Use timers for lights and maintain the lawn to give the appearance that someone is home.

7. Water Damage

Summer storms and heavy rain can lead to significant water damage, especially if your home isn’t properly protected. Insurance claims often stem from flooding, roof leaks, or failed sump pumps.

Prevention Tips:

Inspect Roofing and Gutters: Ensure your roof and gutters are in good condition and clear of debris to facilitate proper drainage.

Install Sump Pumps: Consider installing a sump pump in basements to manage water from heavy rains.

Seal Windows and Doors: Check and seal any gaps around windows and doors to prevent water seepage.

As wildfire seasons become more intense and unpredictable, protecting your home is essential. Amidst the threat of these natural disasters, homeowners insurance emerges as a crucial shield, offering financial security and peace of mind. In this blog, we delve into why homeowners insurance is important during wildfire season and its role in safeguarding your most cherished asset—your home,

1. Financial Protection:

Wildfires can wreak havoc on properties, leaving destruction in their wake. From scorched landscapes to charred remains of homes, the aftermath can be devastating. Homeowners insurance acts as a financial safety net in such dire situations, covering repair or rebuilding costs. This coverage extends not only to the structure of your home but also to personal belongings damaged or lost in the fire. Without insurance, the financial burden of rebuilding or replacing possessions could be overwhelming, potentially leading to financial ruin.

2. Additional Living Expenses:

In the event of a wildfire, evacuation orders are common, forcing families to seek temporary shelter elsewhere. Homeowners insurance often includes coverage for additional living expenses incurred during such displacement. These expenses may include hotel bills, restaurant meals, and other essentials, ensuring that displaced families can maintain a semblance of normalcy amidst the chaos. This aspect of insurance can significantly alleviate the stress and financial strain of displacement, allowing families to focus on rebuilding their lives.

3. Liability Protection:

Beyond property damage, wildfires can also result in liability claims. If a fire originating from your property spreads to neighboring homes or forests, you could be held liable for the damages. Homeowners insurance typically includes liability coverage, protecting you from legal and financial jeopardy. This coverage can include legal defense fees, settlement costs, and damages awarded to specified parties. Without insurance, defending against liability claims could drain your savings and ruin your financial stability.

4. Mitigation and Prevention:

Some homeowners insurance policies offer incentives or discounts for implementing wildfire mitigation measures. This may include clearing vegetation around your property, installing fire-resistant roofing, or upgrading to fire-resistant building materials. By incentivizing proactive measures, insurance companies not only reduce their own risk but also contribute to wildfire prevention efforts. Investing in these precautions not only enhances your home’s resilience but also reduces the likelihood of extensive damage during wildfire season.

5. Peace of Mind:

In times of crisis, the reassurance of having homeowners insurance cannot be overstated. Knowing that you have coverage in place provides a sense of security. Whether it’s the assurance of financial protection or the support during displacement, insurance offers peace of mind, allowing homeowners to focus on their safety and well-being when tragedy hits. This peace of mind is invaluable, offering a sense of stability amidst the chaos of natural disasters.

As wildfires continue to pose a threat to communities, homeowners insurance emerges as an essential safeguard. Investing in homeowners insurance is not just a prudent financial decision but a vital step towards safeguarding your home and loved ones during wildfire season. In the face of nature’s fury, let insurance be your shield, protecting your haven and providing a path to recovery.
Many underestimate the need for flood insurance, but most floods in Washington stem from events less severe than hurricanes. Since 1970, every county in Washington State has faced a Presidential Disaster Declaration for flooding.

According to the National Weather Service:

Flooding typically occurs when prolonged rain falls over several days, when intense rain falls over a short period of time, or when an ice or debris jam causes a river or stream to overflow onto the surrounding area. Flooding can also result from the failure of a water control structure, such as a levee or dam.

In Washington, flooding typically occurs from:

Heavy rainfall on wet or frozen ground, before a snow pack has accumulated, typically cause fall and early winter floods.

Rainfall combined with melting of the low-elevation snow pack typically cause winter and early spring floods.

Late spring floods in Eastern Washington result primarily from melting of the snow pack.

Thunderstorms can cause a flash flood during the summer in Eastern Washington

On some occasions, thunderstorms embedded in winter-like rainstorms cause flash floods in Western Washington.

Just within the last 5-years, Washington has seen its fair share of flooding. Here are 6 local stories that remind us we never know when to expect a flood.
